About Mission Care
Mission Care is a Christian charity which exists to serve people affected by poor health and poverty. At the heart of Mission Care lies the desire to show the love of Jesus Christ, in accordance with the plan of God that is found in the Bible.
The charity was found in 1904 as the Bermondsey Medical Mission by Dr Selena Fox. Dr Fox established a hospital for women and children who did not have access to healthcare. The hospital survived two World Wars and acted as a training centre for hundreds of missionary nurses.
The charity grew when community healthcare facilities were also provided in Downham, through the Brook Lane Medical Mission.These medical practices established continue to flourish today as part of the NHS in Downham and Mottingham. The services delivered by the Mission have changed and developed over the years but the values held by Dr Fox in 1904 remain with the commitment to provide medical and spiritual care to some of society’s most vulnerable people. In 1991 the Mission became known as “Mission Care” in order to reflect more accurately the charity’s purpose and Christian ethos. Mission Care Homes now provide residential and nursing care to over 250 residents in six homes across South East London. High-quality care is provided for older people and for those with high support or mental health needs, with nursing and intermediate care also available.
All Mission Care Homes have an inclusive approach to care provision: no service user or member of staff will ever be treated differently because of their gender, ethnic origin or religious beliefs. Mission Care Homes seek to be market leaders in care provision and are associate members of Age Concern England and founder members of the Christian Care Association. Mission Care is also a member of the Evangelical Alliance, subscribing to their statement of faith.
In 2004, as Mission Care celebrated its centenary year, the charity expanded its work by seeking to serve vulnerable and marginalised people outside of the UK. Mission Care International works alongside local partners to deliver life-changing projects in the developing world. To date projects undertaken and currently underway include: bringing water to a remote village, providing accommodation for educational, healthcare and pastoral support workers, building schools and improving educational facilities, building a clinic with a dispensary and maternity facilities, building a church, building an orphanage, and constructing a new accommodation and support complex for former street boys. At present, Mission Care International works in Ghana, Kenya, Moldova, Nigeria and Uganda.
