Tigers and bears

A large group of residents from Love Walk, unperturbed by Friday's downpour which soaked participants on a trip to the Southbank, visited the natural history gallery at the Horniman Museum and Gardens on Monday 13th June.

After a picnic in the museum's stunning Victorian conservatory, which overlooks beautiful gardens, our residents explored the natural history gallery.

It was especially interesting to see all of the stuffed animals and taxidermy on display, because the Love Walk book club is currently reading 'My Family and Other Animals', an autobiographical text by Gerald Durrell, a renowned naturalist, conservationist and zookeeper.

Mags Gaisford, Activities Coordinator explains, 'the resounding favourite item on display was the outsized, overstuffed walrus', referencing the exhibition's centrepiece which was brought to England from Canada in the 1800s and overstuffed by zealous taxidermists who did not know how the strange and foreign animal was meant to look!
