Remembrance Sunday observed in our homes

Residents in all of our homes were encouraged to commemorate the end of the hostilities of the First World War and the contributions and sacrifices of British and Commonwealth servicemen in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts.

The national remembrance ceremony at the Cenotaph, Whitehall was relayed in each of our homes and residents observed the two minutes silence at 11am.

Watching the parade, royal family and the many representatives from the Armed Services brought back memories for many of our residents and this was encouraged during special reminiscence sessions.

Our staff and residents shared their stories and remembrances with one another. Dot Nathan of Elmwood is pictured on Remembrance Sunday with the medals she was awarded during her service as a Sergeant in the army.

Dot was stationed on the South Coast and travelled between Hastings, Southampton and Wales between 1941-1946, whilst attached to a battery of guns. Her unit operated a 'Predictor' instrument that calculated the likely impact of bombs sent to attack London to allow evacuation and preparation whenever possible in the precious minutes before the bombs landed.

We are privileged to care for so many older people that served for our country during periods of conflict and are humbled to listen to their stories.
